内容简介:

In his book,The World is Flat: a Brief History of the Twenty-First Century,Thomas L. Friedman quotes an official at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing as saying, “I do think Americans are oblivious to the huge changes (in China). Every American who comes over to visit me (in China) is just blown away . . . Your average kid in the U. S. is growing up in a wealthy country with many opportunities, and many are the kids of advantaged educated people and have a sense of entitlement . . . Well, the hard reality for that kid is that fifteen years from now Wu is going to be his boss and Zhou is going to be the doctor in town.” This quotation speaks compellingly to a need for Chinese and North Americans to understand one another in a highly globalized society.

And yet, despite daunting cultural and economic challenges, we sometimes fail to see the world through the lens of the other. Communication problems are compounded when the people communicating are different or strange to each other. Using a cross cultural communication case study approach, this presentation will discuss a range of issues and topics that can make a huge difference in the way Chinese and North Americans interact with one another. Topics such as values and lifestyle patterns, individualism vs. collectivism, perceptions, communication styles, nonverbal dynamics, and types of reasoning will be employed to demonstrate key similarities and differences between Chinese and North American modes of communication.
